Microtransit is coming to Norcross

Gwinnett County, Gateway 85 Community Improvement District, and the city of Norcross will combine resources to improve mobility in a zone around Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Interstate 85. About 36,000 residents in Norcross will have access to the new Southwest Gwinnett Microtransit Pilot launching later this year. Microtransit is an on-demand shared-ride service that you can order from your phone.

The pilot will operate 14 hours a day Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays, for a year. Gwinnett County will provide four vehicles and manage operations. The estimated $1.3 million cost of the program will be funded 44 percent each by Gwinnett County and Gateway85 CID, with the city of Norcross contributing the remainder. The agreement will be in effect from August 1, 2024, through July 31, 2025. To learn more about microtransit, visit RideGwinnett.com.

Tax Assessors' Office to conduct onsite property field visits

Gwinnett Board of Assessors appraisal staff conduct routine field visits to maintain accurate appraisal data as part of the County's annual review process. Representatives from Gwinnett, LMC, or Tyler Technologies verify existing or new construction, measure exteriors, and take photographs. Although no contact or involvement is needed, appraisers will carry identification and announce their presence at the property before beginning a review. Get nutritious meals this summer

Gwinnett County provides free meals at 20 locations. Pick up nutritious breakfast and lunch this summer through Friday, August 2. Grab-and-go meals are available from 11:00am to 1:00pm while supplies last for kids 18 and under and those 19 and older with disabilities.

Celebrate Pride with Gwinnett

Mark your calendars! The County is hosting its Pride in the Park event on Saturday, June 29 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville. This year, the we're recognizing the trailblazers of the LGBTQIA+ community in a wellness walk with a twist, health screenings, entertainment, wellness resources, and so much more!

Prevent detention pond issues

Summer rains are in full swing, which means stormwater detention ponds are working hard. These ponds play a vital role in stormwater management by controlling runoff, preventing flooding, and protecting the environment; however, detention ponds can lose their effectiveness if they are not properly maintained. Catch potential pond problems early with these maintenance tips:

Inspect your detention pond every three to four months and after large rain events
Check for signs of erosion, sediment buildup, excessive litter, or structural problems
Prevent trees from growing on the dam
Keep the area free of trash and debris

Due to U.S. Postal Service mail delays, we encourage you to use our online services to renew your tag, pay property taxes, and more. If you're renewing your tag and need your decal immediately, use one of the 10 self-service kiosks located around Gwinnett. Stay cool in the summer's heat

Summer in Georgia is known to reach extreme temperatures of 100 degrees or higher. This means enjoying the outdoors can be risky, especially for seniors, children, and people with asthma. Limit exposure to the soaring temperatures with these helpful tips:

Take frequent breaks from the sun
Drink water to stay hydrated
Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing
Apply sunscreen to protect your skin
Try to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and limit outdoor activities to early mornings or late evenings

SPLOST

A new park is coming to Gwinnett

A brand new park is on its way! Discovery Park will become the 53rd addition to Gwinnett Parks and Recreation's system. Located at the intersection of Old Norcross and Lawrenceville-Suwanee roads, this future park will offer accessibility and recreational features. Park-goers can look forward to amenities such as a lighted multiuse trail, ball fields, an interactive fountain, and an inclusive playground for children of various ages and abilities. The park is set to open to the public in 2026.

Get rid of your hazardous waste

Bring your household hazardous waste for reuse, recycling, or disposal at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day event on Saturday, July 20 from 8:00am to 11:00am at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville. Residents can bring up to five disposable containers of waste products like paint, motor oil, batteries, cleaning chemicals, and more.

Give a shelter dog a loving home

Offices closed for Independence Day

All Gwinnett County Government offices, apart from operations required for the comfort and safety of residents, will be closed Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day and will resume regular hours on Friday, July 5.

Trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day during the holiday week. For more information, please visit GCSolidWaste.com. A Magistrate Court judge will be available at the Gwinnett County Detention Center during the holiday.

Honor fallen military and public service heroes during Memorial Day ceremony

Join us to honor Gwinnett’s fallen military and public service heroes during the annual Memorial Day ceremony at 1:00pm on Monday, May 27 at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial in Lawrenceville. Georgia Department of Veterans Service Commissioner Patricia Ross, a retired United States Air Force Colonel, will be our keynote speaker this year. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners will also deliver remarks and Gwinnett Fire Chief Fred Cephas will emcee the ceremony.

The Memorial Day ceremony will also stream live on the County’s Facebook page @GwinnettGov and be televised on TV Gwinnett, the County’s local government access cable channel. TV Gwinnett programming is also available streaming and on demand at TVGwinnett.com.

Attend the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration

Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the 2024 AAPI Heritage Night Celebration on Wednesday, May 29 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville. This event provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to explore the history and customs of various AAPI cultures in Gwinnett. Join us for a vibrant evening of performances, food, and more!

If you are unable to attend the celebration, you can also visit our exhibit honoring the AAPI community in the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center Atrium throughout the month of May.

Grab a summer meal on-the-go

Gwinnett's Summer Meals program is back, providing free grab-and-go breakfast and lunch to children 18 and younger, as well as those 19 and older with physical or mental disabilities. Nutritious meals are available from Tuesday, May 28 through Friday, August 2, and can be picked up Monday through Friday from 11:00am to 1:00pm — including County holidays — while supplies last.

Participate in Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services’ Hiring Event

Join us at our upcoming Gwinnett Firefighter/Paramedic Trainee Hiring Event on Tuesday, May 28 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at 3608 Braselton Highway in Dacula. This is a unique opportunity to complete a substantial portion of the first phase of a two-phase hiring process. Participants can complete an orientation, a more detailed application, a background check, physical testing, and an oral interview. Please note that sneakers and long pants are required for the physical testing.

The entire process typically takes two to three hours, although it may take longer. We highly recommend submitting an application at GwinnettFireJobs.com before attending the event.

Share your input on risks for natural disasters in your community

The Gwinnett Office of Emergency Management invites you to a community meeting to update the 2025 Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. The public meeting will be held Wednesday, May 29 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Lilburn Activity Building located at 788 Hillcrest Road. All residents are encouraged to share their comments and learn about the Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan that covers Gwinnett’s 16 cities and unincorporated areas of the county.

Serve your community as a poll official

Get your rental home inspected

Gwinnett County is committed to upholding the interior standards of the International Property Maintenance Code at residential rental properties. If your rental home is damaged, improperly maintained, unsanitary, or unsafe, you may request an inspection by emailing CodeEnforcement@GwinnettCounty.com, visiting GwinnettZIP.com, or calling 770.513.5004.

Once a request is submitted, an inspection appointment will be scheduled. During the inspection, any code violations will be documented on a notice of violation. This service would allow residents in Gwinnett — either those who work at the airport or are traveling for work or leisure — to have a convenient, affordable, and timely connection to the world’s busiest airport. Drop in to learn about updates to Gwinnett's Airport Master Plan

Gwinnett is updating its Airport Master Plan for the Gwinnett County Airport – Briscoe Field. Drop in Tuesday, May 14 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm to Conference Room A at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center to learn about new plans for the airport, speak with the project team, and provide your feedback.

The Airport Master Plan evaluates the airport’s existing and future role, forecasts aviation demand, and guides the development of improved facilities that meet the current and future demands of the airport. Feedback from the public meeting will guide updates and ensure safe and efficient airport operations for the next 20 years.

Attend Gwinnett's annual Multicultural Festival on May 18

Celebrate Gwinnett's vibrant diversity at the 10th annual Gwinnett Multicultural Festival and Gwinnett County Open House on Saturday, May 18 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth. The festival highlights our inclusive community, showcasing live music, dance, and other performing arts, celebrating the county's rich heritage. District 3 News

Summer is right around the corner with temperatures heating up and school wrapping up.

I would like to wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. As a veteran, I also want to express my gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms as we prepare to observe Memorial Day this month.

There's so much happening in District 3 and here's a snapshot of two events I joined.

I'm also excited to share that changes are coming to Lenora Park! Earlier this week, we broke ground on the future community recreation center and gym renovation, funded by the 2017 SPLOST program.

This addition will serve as a community hub for recreation and leisure activities, featuring a new community room with a catering kitchen; a dance studio, art room, and classroom; and an upper balcony with a two-way walking track. For our parkgoers, there’ll also be new locker rooms, restrooms, offices and a reception area, a drop-off and entry vestibule, and parking. The renovation and expansion are slated for completion in 2026.

Celebrate Gwinnett’s diversity at the Multicultural Festival

Join us on Saturday, May 18 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth for the 10th annual Gwinnett Multicultural Festival and County Government Open House. The festival highlights our inclusive community, showcasing live music, dance, and other performing arts that celebrate the county’s rich cultural heritage. The open house is an excellent opportunity for residents to meet local government employees and discover what each County department does to serve the community.

Join us as we honor our fallen heroes

On Monday, May 27, we will gather to honor the fallen military and public service heroes who gave their lives to protect and serve our country and community. Join us at 1:00pm at the Fallen Heroes Memorial at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville to hear remarks from my fellow commissioners and me as we pay our respects. The ceremony will also be broadcast on the Gwinnett County Facebook page.

Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services Hiring Event

Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services will host a Firefighter/Paramedic Trainee Hiring Event on Tuesday, May 28 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Gwinnett Fire Academy located 3608 Braselton Highway in Dacula.

Participants will have the opportunity to complete an orientation, fill out a more detailed application, complete a background check, and take part in physical testing and an oral interview. Sneakers and long pants are required for physical testing and it is recommended to submit an application before attending the event. Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Gwinnett will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month on Wednesday, May 29 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville. The celebration provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to explore the history and customs of the various AAPI cultures in Gwinnett County.

During May, we are commemorating the achievements, contributions, and history of Gwinnett’s Asian and Pacific Islander residents, and how the use of cuisine, art, language, and more compose an awe-inspiring story about the Asian experience in Gwinnett and the United States. What's New in District 3

Thank you Evermore Senior Village

Commissioner Watkins was invited to speak at a town hall for Evermore Senior Village residents in Snellville to address several of their concerns. The event was hosted by Wider Circle Senior Support Group Ambassador Ms. Lillian Bittaye.

Commissioner Watkins and the Evermore residents discussed numerous County activities and resources available to all Gwinnett seniors.

Free food distribution at Rhodes Jordan Park

Residents can pick up fresh and shelf-stable foods on Tuesday, May 14 at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville from 3:00pm until supplies last. Rowen Update

The Rowen project continues to move along. Recently, Rowen established Living Labs for its academic partners and will accept applications for a qualified landscaping firm to provide landscaping maintenance for the site through Wednesday, May 15.

Summer camp slots available

There is still time to sign your kids up for summer camp. Full-day Adventure Camp is offered at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville from June 3 to July 26, with split sessions for ages five to six and seven to 13. Full-day Kidsplosion Camp is offered at Lenora Park Gym from May 27 to July 26 for ages seven to 13. The Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center will host Animal Ambassador Camp from 12:30pm to 4:30pm with ages seven to nine offered June 3 to June 7 and ages 10 to 13 offered June 10 to June 13.

Advanced voting for General Primary and Nonpartisan General Election

starts April 29

The General Primary and Nonpartisan General Election Day is on Tuesday, May 21. Registered voters can vote advance in person every day, including weekends, from April 29 to May 17 from 7:00am to 7:00pm at the Gwinnett Voter Registrations and Elections office in Lawrenceville and nine advance voting locations around the county.

Voting by mail is another option available for voters. You can request an absentee by mail ballot for the May 21 election now through Friday, May 10. To check the status of your voter registration, see a sample ballot, and find your polling location, visit the Secretary of State’s My Voter Page.

Microtransit Pilot coming to Norcross

Gwinnett County, the Gateway85 Community Improvement District, and the city of Norcross will combine resources to improve mobility in a zone around Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Interstate 85 later this year. About 36,000 residents in Norcross will have access to the new Southwest Gwinnett Microtransit Pilot.

The pilot will operate 14 hours a day, Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays, for one year. The estimated $1.3 million cost of the program will be funded 44 percent each by Gwinnett County and the Gateway85 Community Improvement District, with the city of Norcross contributing the remainder. The agreement between the three entities will be in effect from Augst 1, 2024, through July 31, 2025.

Attend a poll official hiring event this Friday

Become a poll official at a hiring event this Friday, April 26 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm at the Five Forks Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library. During the event, attendees must complete an I-9 form and bring the required original identification documents for verification. If you are unable to attend the hiring event, you can learn more about becoming a poll official in Gwinnett.

Recycle your used items for Earth Day

Have some hard-to-recycle items? Join us — rain or shine — at Gwinnett’s annual Earth Day recycling event on Saturday, April 27 from 9:00am to noon at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Each year, Gwinnett Solid Waste Management and Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful join the global community to celebrate Earth Day.

Drop off items that are typically more difficult to recycle, such as electronics, latex and oil-based paints, tires, paper, and clothing. Volunteers will remove items from disposable containers in your vehicle’s trunk or back seat. For a list of acceptable items and more details, visit GCSolidWaste.com.

Drop off your expired medication

Gwinnett Police is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration for National Drug Take Back, an initiative that allows residents to properly dispose of unused or expired prescription medications.

Residents can drop off tablets, capsules, patches, and other forms of prescription drugs on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Police Headquarters and any of our six precincts. To learn more, please email PDCommunityAffairs@GwinnettCounty.com.

Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

In recognition of 2024 Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, an exhibit honoring the AAPI community will be open to the public for the entire month of May in the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center Atrium. This year’s exhibit highlights the rich variety of cultures and customs represented by the AAPI community, from popular cuisine and holidays to religions and languages. The AAPI Heritage Month exhibit will be open during regular business hours.

Get your rental home inspected

Gwinnett County is committed to upholding the interior standards of the International Property Maintenance Code at residential rental properties. If your rental home is damaged, improperly maintained, unsanitary, or unsafe, you may request an inspection by emailing CodeEnforcement@GwinnettCounty.com, visiting GwinnettZIP.com, or calling 770.513.5004.

Once a request is submitted, an inspection appointment will be scheduled. During the inspection, any code violations will be documented on a notice of violation. A Gwinnett Code Enforcement officer will then work with the property owner or manager to address all violations. For a list of common interior code violations, visit GwinnettCodeEnforcement.com.
