February 2024

Hello L. David,

Let the good times roll with February’s fun-filled calendar of upcoming events! From Valentine’s Day and Black History Month celebrations to Mardi Gras and Leap Day, register for can’t-miss recreational fun with family and friends around Gwinnett.

Celebrate Black History Month
The roots of Black History Month date back to 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week as part of his dedication to showcasing the contributions of Black Americans. This week of recognition was launched the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, which every American president has since recognized, endorsing a specific theme.

Join us in saluting this year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts”, at the following festivals:

We’re also exploring the rich history of African-American culture in Gwinnett during the Explore Black History Bus Tour on Saturday, February 17. Be sure to pack a lunch for this four-hour tour!

Interested in learning about some of Gwinnett's historic Black churches? Visit an exhibit around the county to discover how they contributed to many of Gwinnett's Black communities.
