February 2025

Hello L. David,

Love is in the air! From Valentine’s dances and a K-9 wedding to Black History commemorations, February’s calendar is packed with heartfelt fun for everyone. Make a date with family and friends!

Celebrate Black History Month

The roots of Black History Month date back to 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week as part of his dedication to showcasing the contributions of Black Americans. This recognition was launched during the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, which every American president has since recognized, endorsing a commemorative and insightful theme.

Join us in saluting this year’s theme, “African Americans and Labor”, at the following events:

Explore the rich history of African-American culture in Gwinnett during the Explore Black History Bus Tour on Saturday, February 15. Be sure to pack a lunch for this four-hour tour! Cost is $11.

Learn about Gwinnett’s early schools during segregation at the Black History Month Exhibit from February 1 through February 28 at select parks.
