July 2024

Hello L. David,

Happy Independence Day! I hope you get to spend the holiday surrounded by family and friends.

June was a busy month with various celebrations. We celebrated Flag Day on June 14 and Juneteenth on June 19. We also gathered with our vibrant LGBTQ+ community for Pride in the Park on June 29 at Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville. I also had the honor and privilege of speaking to Korean War veterans at the 74th Korean War Veterans celebration.

We are not slowing down in Gwinnett and have many exciting news and events. Keep reading for more information on news and events happening across Gwinnett and in District 3.

Board of Commissioners proposes to hold millage rate steady

The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners is considering keeping the general fund millage rate the same as last year at 6.95 mills. When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year's digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

Gwinnett's rollback millage rate for 2024 is calculated at 6.5 mills. The 2024 millage rate the Board of Commissioners is considering is 6.95 mills, or .45 mills above the rollback millage rate. Therefore, state law requires commissioners to announce a property tax increase.

I invite you to share your comments during a public hearing on Tuesday, July 16 at 11:00am at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville. You can also submit comments online regarding the proposed millage rate. For more information on the millage rate and property taxes, visit GwinnettCounty.com.

Gwinnett Police asking for school supply donations

The Gwinnett County Police Department is collecting school supplies for students during the Operation Children Thrive back-to-school supply drive through July 17. This year, there is a significant need for backpacks, but other items, such as colored pencils, markers, pens, rulers, and notebooks, will be accepted. Click here for a full list of school supplies that are needed.

District 3 residents can drop off school supplies at the Bay Creek Precinct located at 185 Ozora Road in Loganville, the East Precinct located at 2273 Alcovy Road in Dacula, or any of the other Police precincts in the Gwinnett.

Gwinnett breaks ground on 53rd park

Discovery Park will become the 53rd addition to the award-winning Gwinnett Parks and Recreation system. Located at the intersection of Old Norcross Road and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, park-goers can look forward to amenities such as a lighted multiuse trail, ball fields, an interactive fountain, and an inclusive playground for children of various ages and abilities.

The $28 million is set to open to the public in 2026 and was funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, known as SPLOST. To learn more about how your pennies are working in Gwinnett, visit GwinnettSPLOST.com.
