Board approves $2.67 billion budget for 2025

Earlier this month, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a $2.67 billion budget for the 2025 fiscal year. The adopted spending plan consists of a $2.11 billion operating budget and a $555 million capital improvements budget, which includes funds from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program.

 

The adopted budget allows Gwinnett County Government to address local needs such as public safety, community health, and high-quality infrastructure while balancing increasing costs of labor, materials, and services facing the County and residents alike. The budget also includes the approval of organizational changes, including the creation of the Parks and Recreation Department, which was previously part of the Department of Community Services.

Celebrate Black History Month with us

Join Gwinnett County to celebrate Black History Month on Wednesday, February 19 at 6:00pm. The event will honor the past and highlight progress toward a brighter, more equitable future. Gwinnett expands CASA program support

Gwinnett continues to prioritize the welfare of children in foster care through its ongoing support of the Court Appointed Special Advocates program. The National CASA Association for Children and Georgia CASA provide trained volunteers to advocate for children removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. A new grant will fund the salaries of the CASA Program Director and two volunteer supervisors. In the past cycle, 36 CASA volunteers contributed more than 3,900 hours to helping foster children throughout the county.

Expand your small business network

Uncover new leads at the Small Business Networking Continental Breakfast. On Wednesday, January 29 from 7:30am to 9:00am, meet like-minded individuals to forge connections that can help you propel your business forward. Plant your own veggie garden

Gardeners of all skill levels are invited to reserve a raised plot for the 2025 growing season at one of Gwinnett's 11 community gardens. Individual plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with an annual $35 fee. Winterize your plumbing system

Did you know that freezing temperatures can cause damage to your plumbing system? It can lead to leaks, water damage, and a higher water bill. As the temperature drops, it's critical to winterize your plumbing to protect your home and conserve our water resources. Prepare your pipes for the cold weather with these helpful tips:

  • Place a spigot cover on outdoor faucets
  • Leave cabinet doors open to let warm air in
  • Insulate pipes in attics, basements, and crawl spaces
  • Set your thermostat to 55 F while traveling to prevent freezing

Discover ways to conserve water

Learn how toilets play an integral role in indoor water conservation at our virtual Toilet Tech Workshop on Thursday, February 13 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Emissions are required for 2001 – 2022 model cars

For 2025, all gasoline-powered and light-duty trucks (weighing 8,500 pounds or less) with model years 2001 through 2022 must undergo emissions testing for registration and renewal.

Heat your home safely

As temperatures drop in the winter months, some residents may seek alternative ways to provide heat during power outages. With simple steps, you can prevent most heating-related fires. Stay safe and warm while using space heaters with these helpful tips:

  • Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable materials
  • Plug heaters directly into wall outlets; avoid extension cords and power strips
  • Turn heaters off when not in use
  • Check for safety features, like auto power-off
  • Regularly inspect cords for damage

SPLOST

Improvements coming to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard

The County is enhancing traffic flow and safety around Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. This 1.78-mile roadway widening project will add a new northbound travel lane and upgrade five intersections from Holcomb Bridge Road to Medlock Bridge Road. The upgraded intersections will include Holcomb Bridge Road, Peachtree Corners East, Paul Duke STEM High School, Reps Miller Road, and Technology Parkway. In addition to these improvements, the area will be enhanced with new concrete sidewalks, median islands, curb and gutter, and drainage upgrades. Funded by the SPLOST program, the project is anticipated to be completed by 2026.

Stay warm during the coldest nights

Gwinnett County offers five warming stations for residents to receive temporary, overnight relief from long-term exposure to frigid temperatures. Stations will be open from 6:00pm to 7:00am on nights when temperatures fall to 35 degrees or below. Residents will have access to a warm place to rest and a meal.

SERVING GWINNETT

Get rid of your hazardous waste

Have items you need to dispose of? Bring them to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day event on Saturday, February 8 at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. From 9:00am to noon, residents are invited to bring up to five disposable containers of items like motor oil, batteries, cleaning chemicals, and more.

 

For a complete list of acceptable items, visit GwinnettCB.org. The Gwinnett County Fairgrounds is located at 2405 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville.

Local nonprofits selected to receive $4.95 million in grants

Gwinnett County Government selected 65 nonprofits that serve critical needs to receive $4.95 million in Nonprofit Capacity Building Grant funding, provided by the United States Department of the Treasury through the American Rescue Plan Act. These funds will be managed and distributed by the County to help nonprofits increase their effectiveness and enhance their impact on the community. Learn more at GwinnettCounty.com.

County offices closed for Presidents Day

All Gwinnett County Government offices, apart from operations required for the comfort and safety of residents, will be closed Monday, February 17 for the Presidents Day holiday and will resume regular hours on Tuesday, February 18.

 

Trash and recycling collection will remain the same during the holiday. Visit GCSolidWaste.com for more information. A Magistrate Court judge will be available at the Gwinnett County Detention Center during the holiday.
