Happy May!

Summer is quickly approaching, and the school year is coming to a close.

I would like to wish all the moms out there a Happy Mother's Day! We appreciate all that you do. I would also like to express my gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and freedoms as we prepare to observe Memorial Day.

I had the privilege of engaging with our community at events around District 3. I served as a panelist at "Glance Gwinnett" hosted by Leadership Gwinnett (photo below left), providing information about Gwinnett County Government to a diverse group of civic-minded leaders representing business, nonprofits, education, and government sectors. In addition, I also provided the welcome message and presented a proclamation at the Gwinnett County National Day of Prayer on the Lawrenceville Lawn (photo below right).

Keep reading below for exciting news and events happening around Gwinnett and District 3.

Join us as we honor our fallen heroes

On Monday, May 26, we will gather to honor the fallen military and public service heroes who gave their lives to protect and serve our country and community. Join us at 1:00pm at the Fallen Heroes Memorial at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville to hear remarks from my fellow commissioners and me as we pay our respects. The ceremony will also be broadcast on the Gwinnett County Facebook page.

Ride Gwinnett to merge commuter service with Xpress

Beginning Monday, June 16, Ride Gwinnett commuter service will merge operations with Xpress, a regional commuter bus service operated by the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority. Current Ride Gwinnett commuter customers are encouraged to review the upcoming service changes and plan for a smooth transition to Xpress.

These updates are part of the ATL's systemwide service changes to improve efficiency in response to decreased ridership and shifts in commute patterns following the pandemic.

Celebrate Gwinnett's diversity at the Multicultural Festival

Gwinnett's annual Multicultural Festival and County Government Open House will take place on Saturday, May 17 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth. Residents can enjoy a fun-filled day with cultural performances from around the globe, bounce houses, carnival rides, touch-a-truck with public safety vehicles, and more.

What's New in District 3

Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month

Gwinnett County will commemorate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by recognizing the rich variety of culture and countries that make up our AAPI community.

The county will honor the national theme of "Choosing Humanity" at the annual AAPI Cultural Night on Friday, May 30 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville. Bring the whole family for a vibrant festival complete with food, music, dance, and community. Residents interested in joining the celebration can register here.

Upgrades coming to Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center

A project to renovate and expand the Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center, located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville will kick off soon. The 3,520-square-foot addition will enhance animal intake, adoption services, and training spaces, and add new shade structures over outdoor animal bond areas. The project will also convert the existing K-9 unit building into specialized high-risk and quarantine isolation kennels.

Expanded parking and reconfigured intake and adoption spaces will improve accessibility and streamline operations, reflecting the County's commitment to prioritizing animal welfare. The $4.4 million upgrades are funded by the 2023 SPLOST. The center will remain open to the public during renovations.

Celebrate Older Americans Month

Gwinnett is highlighting our vibrant senior community with a lineup of events in May in honor of Older Americans Month. This annual campaign is designed to challenge stereotypes about aging and empower older adults to remain engaged, independent, and included.

Residents ages 50 and older are invited to celebrate this year's theme "Flip the Script on Aging" at various activities around the County. In District 3, events will be held throughout the month at Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville. Click here for more information on events and to register.
