June 2024
Hello L. David,

Summer has arrived! I want to thank everyone who joined us as we honored our fallen heroes at our Memorial Day ceremony. It was another solemn day as we remembered all those who made the ultimate sacrifice and inducted World War II solider E Daniel Hinton Moore and Georgia State Trooper Jimmy Cenescar into the Fallen Heroes Memorial. We owe all our military and public service officers our gratitude for their sacrifices. If you missed the ceremony, you can watch it online.

Happening Around Gwinnett
Gwinnett Commissioners approve transit referendum
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners took a significant step toward improving mobility for residents. The board approved a transit referendum to be placed on the November 5 General Election ballot. If approved by voters, the transit referendum would impose a one percent sales tax for 30 years to fund up to 75 transit projects in Gwinnett.

A Transit SPLOST aims to distribute financial responsibility more equitably among all residents, businesses, and visitors, alleviating the burden on Gwinnett’s property owners. Currently, Gwinnett's transit system is funded by property owners through the County general fund, the federal government, discretionary grants, and Ride Gwinnett fares.

The transit plan includes an airport ride to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, enhanced and expanded county coverage by local bus, additional transit transfer facilities, and the expansion of microtransit providing 100 percent countywide coverage. The new transit referendum does not include heavy rail or MARTA.

The dedicated Transit SPLOST would be paid by all consumers who purchase goods in Gwinnett County. To learn more, visit GwinnettCounty.com/YourRide.
Board approves non-discrimination ordinance
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners passed a non-discrimination ordinance, which provides protection to members of the LGBTQ community and other groups in the county.

The non-discrimination ordinance establishes a process for review of discrimination complaints against businesses operating in unincorporated Gwinnett and owners, managers, and employees. The ordinance intends to address discriminatory acts that are not addressed or preempted by state or federal law.

PROTECTING OUR RESOURCES

Prevent detention pond issues
Summer rains are in full swing, which means stormwater detention ponds are working hard. These ponds play a vital role in stormwater management by controlling runoff, preventing flooding, and protecting the environment; however, detention ponds can lose their effectiveness if they are not properly maintained. Catch potential pond problems early with these maintenance tips:
  • Inspect your detention pond every three to four months and after large rain events
  • Check for signs of erosion, sediment buildup, excessive litter, or structural problems
  • Prevent trees from growing on the dam
  • Keep the area free of trash and debris

For more information about what to look for during a self-inspection and how to address problems, visit Gwinnetth2o.com.

Enhance your landscaping with rainwater

Learn how to collect and store rainwater in a rain barrel for landscaping use on Saturday, July 13 from 10:00am to noon at the Grayson Senior Center in Grayson. A $40 pre-payment is required to take home your rain barrel. To register, please visit Gwinnetth2o.com, call 678.376.6914, or email DWRworkshops@GwinnettCounty.com with your name, address, and phone number.

PUBLIC SAFETY

Stay cool in the summer's heat
Summer in Georgia is known to reach extreme temperatures of 100 degrees or higher. This means enjoying the outdoors can be risky, especially for seniors, children, and people with asthma. Limit exposure to the soaring temperatures with these helpful tips:
  • Take frequent breaks from the sun
  • Drink water to stay hydrated
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing
  • Apply sunscreen to protect your skin
  • Try to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and limit outdoor activities to early mornings or late evenings

These necessary precautions can help you stay cool and safe during the summer months. For more heat safety tips, visit GwinnettSafety411.com.

May 2024
Hello L. David,

Summer is right around the corner with temperatures heating up and school wrapping up.

I would like to wish all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. As a veteran, I also want to express my gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms as we prepare to observe Memorial Day this month.

There's so much happening in District 3 and here's a snapshot of two events I joined.

I'm also excited to share that changes are coming to Lenora Park! Earlier this week, we broke ground on the future community recreation center and gym renovation, funded by the 2017 SPLOST program.

This addition will serve as a community hub for recreation and leisure activities, featuring a new community room with a catering kitchen; a dance studio, art room, and classroom; and an upper balcony with a two-way walking track. For our parkgoers, there’ll also be new locker rooms, restrooms, offices and a reception area, a drop-off and entry vestibule, and parking. The renovation and expansion are slated for completion in 2026.

Please keep reading below to learn about upcoming events happening in Gwinnett this month.
