PROTECTING OUR RESOURCES

Keep our waterways clean
Storm drains in Gwinnett prevent flooding by collecting rain runoff. However, when stormwater picks up any pollutants on its way to the drain, it can lead to pollution in our local waterways. The following healthy habits can help keep the stormwater drainage system clean:
  • Properly dispose of household waste
  • Clean up after your pets
  • Pick up trash on your street
  • Repair leaking vehicles quickly
  • Recycle automotive fluids at local auto parts stores

It's imperative that we all play a role in protecting our waterways. Never dump anything down a storm drain and report illicit discharges to Water Resources at 678.376.7000.

For more information, visit Gwinnetth2o.com.

February 2024
Hello L. David,

February is a time for us to all recognize the contribution Black Americans have made to our society as we celebrate Black History Month.
I am deeply humbled to be a part of Gwinnett's history as one of the first two Black men to serve on the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. And I'm fortunate to serve alongside Gwinnett's first Black chairwoman, Nicole Love Hendrickson.

In January, I provided a State of District 3 at the Lawrenceville Rotary Club and took part in a troop send off at Gwinnett Central High School. I would like to personally thank those troops and all those currently serving or who have served in our armed forces for their service to our great country.

As we enter February, we have so much to celebrate and recognize the ways Black Americans have fueled our success as a community and country. We have some exciting news and Black History Month events happening in Gwinnett. Keep reading to learn more about some exciting events we have in February.

Happening Around Gwinnett
Board approves Notice of Intent to Call for a Referendum
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners took a significant step toward improving mobility by unanimously approving a notice of intent to call for a referendum. As outlined in Georgia law, this action is required before the Board can officially call for a transit referendum to be placed on the November 2024 ballot.

An integral aspect of the plan proposes a shift in the County’s current mobility funding model to a one percent dedicated sales tax. A Transit SPLOST aims to distribute financial responsibility more equitably among all residents, businesses, and visitors, alleviating the burden on Gwinnett’s property owners. The County will submit the referendum project list from the Atlanta Regional Transit Plan to the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority for approval during the ATL Board Meeting on Thursday, February 1.

Hello L. David,

Let the good times roll with February’s fun-filled calendar of upcoming events! From Valentine’s Day and Black History Month celebrations to Mardi Gras and Leap Day, register for can’t-miss recreational fun with family and friends around Gwinnett.

Celebrate Black History Month
The roots of Black History Month date back to 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week as part of his dedication to showcasing the contributions of Black Americans. This week of recognition was launched the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, which every American president has since recognized, endorsing a specific theme.

Join us in saluting this year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts”, at the following festivals:

We’re also exploring the rich history of African-American culture in Gwinnett during the Explore Black History Bus Tour on Saturday, February 17. Be sure to pack a lunch for this four-hour tour!

Board of Commissioners approves notice of intent to call for a referendum
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners took a significant step toward improving mobility by unanimously approving a notice of intent to call for a referendum. As outlined in Georgia law, this action is required before the Board can officially call for a transit referendum to be placed on the 2024 November ballot. An integral aspect of the plan proposes a shift in the County’s current mobility funding model to a one percent dedicated sales tax.

In September, the Board approved its Transit Plan aiming to expand Ride Gwinnett, the County’s transit system. The new Transit Plan provides 100 percent transit coverage across the county, including two connections from Gwinnett County to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the expansion of its shared-ride service. The next steps involve submitting the referendum project list, taken from the Atlanta Regional Transit Plan to the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority for approval during the ATL Board Meeting on February 1.

January 2024

Welcome to Neighbors in Uniform, a monthly newsletter that provides information about Gwinnett County Police events, topics, programs, and initiatives. We are honored to have the respect and trust of the residents we serve and protect, and we're happy to be a resource and support.

Santa's Community Workshops provide more than 2,500 toys to local children!

Navigating the holidays can be overwhelming for those who are already struggling to make ends meet. Gifts, decorations, food, and travel costs can become financial strains when the rent payment and other basic needs are top priority.

The Gwinnett Police Department recognizes that times are hard for many families in our community. With the help of residents and businesses, we hosted our third annual Santa's Community Workshop events in December at the Smoke Creek Mobile Home Park, The Reserve at Ivy Creek Apartments, and Jones RV Park. We also were able to provide toys to children and teens at the Single Parent Alliance & Resource Center in Norcross.

We thank our Gwinnett community members who answered the call and generously provided more than 2,500 toys during our Fill the Sleigh Toy Drive. These toys allowed us to be a blessing to kids and families during the holiday season. We also give a special thank you to our friends at the Salvation Army in Gwinnett, Ismaili Civic, Rebecca Kay Sapp Law Firm, Yezmin Sagbini, and our fellow Gwinnett County partners Live Healthy Gwinnett, B2 Anywhere, and Volunteer Gwinnett sections of the Department of Community Services for providing food, games, volunteers, and books to make our holiday events more memorable.

One of the Santa's Community Workshops was featured in Go Gwinnett!. Watch the episode below for a look at some of the special moments.

Free Crime Prevention and Safety Programs for residents and business owners
The Gwinnett Police Community Affairs Section offers a variety of free seminars to help educate the community on best safety practices and crime issues. Our most requested presentations include:

  • Security Surveys for residential and commercial properties: Learn how to reduce the likelihood of theft and burglary for your home or business.
  • Workplace Violence and Active Threat: Learn how to think differently and improvise if a violent situation arises at your place of employment.
  • Child Safety Seat Checks: Learn how to properly install a child safety seat in your vehicle.

Safety Tip of the Month: Beware of altered, forged, and counterfeit checks

Gwinnet Police continues to see check forgery used to steal funds from bank accounts. These thefts can range from several hundred dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. One commonality seen in these cases is that the original check is mailed to vendors or family members. The envelopes are often stolen from the mail and then checks can be altered and illegally cashed. Below are a few tips you can use to help minimize this form of theft.

  • Pay digitally, using peer-to-peer payment services such as Zelle or electronic bill pay.
  • If a check must be mailed, make copies of the original.
  • Drop off checks in person at the post office or consider using UPS or FedEx with a delivery notification.
  • Monitor your bank accounts and report suspicious activity to your bank.
  • For companies and businesses who issue large amounts of checks, use a positive pay system through your bank.

Live a heart-healthy lifestyle!
Living a healthy lifestyle is key to prevent or control risk factors and health issues that could lead to sudden cardiac arrest or even death. Here are some great ways to ensure you live an active and heart-healthy lifestyle:
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat healthy meals
  • Maintain your health screenings
  • Manage existing health conditions

Another important aspect of living a heart-healthy lifestyle is to learn CPR and how to use an automatic external defibrillator. You can learn how to save a life in just a couple minutes with our adult hands-only CPR class. Get active and involved! Sign up for one of our classes at GwinnettFireEducation.com.
Fire and life safety for older adults
Did you know that older adults have a greater risk of injury or death in a home fire? They may not react as quickly when the smoke alarm sounds or be able to move as fast to escape the smoke and flames. Early warning of a fire could provide more time to escape. Protect older adults from home fires with these three tips:
  • Install working smoke alarms on every level of the home and in each of the bedrooms. The more smoke alarms you have, the earlier you will know there’s fire.
  • Have two ways out of every room (a door or a window) and develop a home fire escape plan. Be sure to practice fire drills to test your plan.
  • Get rid of home hazards and habits that could cause a fire to start or grow in intensity. This includes overloaded electrical outlets, poorly maintained heating appliances, cluttered exit pathways, and unsafe cooking practices.

Want to learn more safety tips for older adults? We have a class dedicated to our 55 years and older community that teaches medication safety, fire safety, how to avoid falls at home, and so much more. Click here to register for the class today!

  • Insulate pipes in attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
  • Use an insulated spigot cover on outdoor faucets.
  • While traveling, set your thermostat to 55 degrees to prevent freezing.
  • Open cabinet doors to let in warm air.

  • Follow directions from local officials.
  • When driving, accelerate and decelerate slowly.
  • Avoid stopping when going uphill.

  • Treat nonworking traffic signals as a four-way stop.

Gwinnett receives Innovation Award for its Transit Development Plan
Gwinnett County received the 2023 Georgia Transit Association Innovation Award for its Transit Development Plan. The award recognizes exceptional innovation in customer or community service and technology.

The Transit Development Plan was fueled by community engagement, reaching residents, businesses, and community stakeholders who shared their feedback over 18 months. The new plan embraces a fresh, innovative approach that provides the right services in the right places, and it addresses gaps by providing additional transit options for Ride Gwinnett like microtransit, airport ride, bus rapid transit, and increased transfer facilities.

Subdivision added to streetlighting program
Gwinnett County is set to improve traffic safety and enhance community well-being by incorporating the Parkwood Ridge subdivision into its streetlighting program. This decision follows a request from property owners who live in the Snellville-area neighborhood.

Gwinnett's streetlighting program aims to illuminate residential streets throughout the county, working in collaboration with utility providers to maintain a uniform standard of streetlighting. Walton EMC will be responsible for installing and maintaining 34 energy-efficient LED streetlights, funded by the 2017 SPLOST program at a cost of $18,360. Who is the most badazz person in history that no one knows about?

Lozen was a warrior and spiritual leader of the Chiricahua Apache, who lived in the late 19th century. She was known for her exceptional horseback riding, sharpshooting, and strategic thinking. She fought alongside her brother, Victorio, and the famous Apache leader Geronimo, and was considered to be one of the most skilled warriors of her tribe. She also had a reputation as a powerful medicine woman, and many believed that she had supernatural powers.
Lozen actively fought against the U.S. Army and Mexican army for the preservation of Apache way of life, freedom and their land, and was known for her ferocity in battle and her ability to evade capture. She was also known for her ability to scout and gather intelligence for her people, which was vital in the Apache resistance.
Unfortunately, her story is not well-known, but she is remembered and honored by the Apache people and some historians as a powerful and respected warrior, leader and medicine woman.
