The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners took a significant step toward improving mobility by unanimously approving a notice of intent to call for a referendum. As outlined in Georgia law, this action is required before the Board can officially call for a transit referendum to be placed on the November 2024 ballot.

Residents who want to be involved in the elections process and earn up to $440 per election are invited to two poll official hiring events in February. The first event will take place on Monday, February 5 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Bogan Park Community Recreation Center in Buford. The second event will take place on Monday, February 12 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Lilburn Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library in Lilburn.

 

During the event, attendees must complete an I-9 form and bring the required original identification documents for verification. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, a U.S. citizen, and be able to read, write, and speak English. They also must be a Gwinnett County resident or be a Gwinnett County Government employee and have access to a computer for required online training. If you are unable to attend the poll hiring events, please apply online.

 

With election season now underway, it's crucial to register to vote now. Georgia residents wishing to register must be U.S. citizens, legal residents of their voting county, and at least 18 years of age by Election Day. The deadline to register to vote in the March 12 Presidential Preference Primary is Monday, February 12. Check your registration status, download a voter registration application, view sample ballots, and locate your polling location at MVP.SOS.GA.gov.

The Gwinnett Youth Commission focuses on personal and professional development, civic engagement, and public service. The Gwinnett Police Department recognizes that times are hard for many families in our community. With the help of residents and businesses, we hosted our third annual Santa's Community Workshop events in December at the Smoke Creek Mobile Home Park, The Reserve at Ivy Creek Apartments, and Jones RV Park. We also were able to provide toys to children and teens at the Single Parent Alliance & Resource Center in Norcross.

 

We thank our Gwinnett community members who answered the call and generously provided more than 2,500 toys during our Fill the Sleigh Toy Drive. These toys allowed us to be a blessing to kids and families during the holiday season. We also give a special thank you to our friends at the Salvation Army in Gwinnett, Ismaili Civic, Rebecca Kay Sapp Law Firm, Yezmin Sagbini, and our fellow Gwinnett County partners Live Healthy Gwinnett, B2 Anywhere, and Volunteer Gwinnett sections of the Department of Community Services for providing food, games, volunteers, and books to make our holiday events more memorable.

Gwinnet Police continues to see check forgery used to steal funds from bank accounts. These thefts can range from several hundred dollars to several hundred thousand dollars. One commonality seen in these cases is that the original check is mailed to vendors or family members. The envelopes are often stolen from the mail and then checks can be altered and illegally cashed. Below are a few tips you can use to help minimize this form of theft.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a $2.53 billion budget on Tuesday, January 2 for the 2024 fiscal year. The adopted spending plan consists of a $1.97 billion operating budget and a $561 million capital improvements budget, which includes funds from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program.

 

Prioritizing community well-being, the budget includes funding to improve access to affordable housing, introduce an initiative investing in mental and chronic healthcare, and expands Gwinnett Fire’s staff and vehicle fleet. The budget also includes improvements for public works, updates to the Solid Waste Management Plan, and enhancements to the Gwinnett Trails network to meet current and future needs.
